Moon Phases — what each one is for, in plain language
by eras.lol editorial team · published 2026-05-10 · reviewed monthly
the moon cycles through 8 phases roughly every 29 days. each phase has a specific kind of energy you can use — for starting things, growing them, releasing them, or composting what's done. you don't need to be an astrologer to use the moon. you just need to know which phase you're in and what it's asking for.
the 8 phases
🌑 new moon — plant. this is when seeds go in the ground. write down what you want, however small. the room is dark on purpose: nothing else is competing for attention.
🌒 waxing crescent — feed quietly. don't announce yet. the thing you planted at the new moon needs water and time, not an audience.
🌓 first quarter — commit out loud. there's tension here — the seed wants to break ground but the world is still asking "is this real?" answer yes.
🌔 waxing gibbous — push through the doubt. the thing is visible now and you can see all its flaws. don't edit yet. push.
🌕 full moon — release what is heavy. the moon is fully lit and so is everything you've been carrying. write down what you're ready to put down. read it aloud. burn it or fold it away.
🌖 waning gibbous — let it integrate. don't try to learn the lesson immediately. the body is digesting.
🌗 last quarter — edit what isn't working. cut what didn't bloom. it's the only mercy you can give it.
🌘 waning crescent — compost, rest, repeat. nothing new. nothing demanding. the dark moon before the new moon is silence.
how to actually use it
don't turn this into another performance metric. the moon doesn't care if you missed a new moon ritual. it's a rhythm you can opt into when you want — like noticing the seasons. on full moon nights, when you can feel the room is louder than usual and you can't fall asleep, that's the cue. write something down. release something. don't fix anything. go back to bed.
full moon and new moon are the two that matter most
new moon is for setting intentions in private. nothing dramatic. write 3 things in your phone. full moon is for releasing what no longer fits. write what you're putting down. fold it, burn it, throw it in the river. the body knows when something has been carried too long, and the full moon gives you permission to put it down.
moon phases and your sign
each new moon and full moon falls in a specific zodiac sign — and that sign tells you the *area of life* the moon is highlighting. a full moon in cancer asks about home and family. a new moon in scorpio plants intentions about depth and intimacy. the aquarius moon asks about the future you're building. take the quiz to see which lunar lens fits your current era.
frequently asked
how often is a full moon?
every ~29.5 days. occasionally a calendar month gets two full moons — the second is called a "blue moon."
do i need to do a ritual?
no. ritual is optional. noticing is enough. write a sentence. drink a glass of water on purpose. that counts.
what if i missed the new moon?
plant the seed anyway. the moon doesn't check your timestamps. the next 24-48 hours after a new moon still hold the planting energy.
is the moon affecting me physically?
sleep cycles measurably shift around the full moon for many people. tides, plant growth, and a few documented mood patterns also correlate. not every claim about the moon holds up — but the body knows.
