Privacy & Data Policy

we built this site so you don't have to make an account, give us your email, or trust us with anything significant. here's exactly what happens to the small amount of data we do touch.

what we collect about you

nothing leaves your device for the quiz itself. when you take the eras quiz, your birth date, name, and answers are stored in your browser's localStorage — a small private cache that lives only in your browser. we do not have a server that receives or stores quiz data. clear your browser cache and the data is gone forever.

analytics happens. we use Google Tag Manager + Google Analytics 4 to count anonymous page views and quiz completions. this tells us things like "1,243 people took the quiz this week" but never connects to your identity. analytics cookies are set under the _ga prefix; you can opt out via your browser's privacy settings or by using an ad-blocker.

payments use third parties. if you buy the extended forecast ($1.99) or cosmic calendar ($4.99), the payment is processed by a checkout provider (currently Lemon Squeezy / Paddle / Gumroad — depending on configuration). they receive your name, email, and card number to process the transaction. we never see your card details. the only thing we receive back is a confirmation that the purchase happened, which we record in your localStorage so the unlocked content shows up.

what we do not collect

• no account creation, no passwords, no email gate
• no IP-based geolocation logging on our side (your hosting provider's standard server logs may retain IPs for ~30 days for security)
• no fingerprinting, no third-party tracking pixels beyond standard analytics
• no microphone, no camera, no contacts access — these permissions are explicitly disabled in our security headers
• no email marketing list — we have no way to email you because we don't have your email

cookies in plain language

• localStorage (not cookies): stores your quiz answers, birth date, name, and IAP-owned status. private to your browser. we cannot read it from our server because we do not have a server that does that.
• Google Analytics cookies (_ga, _gid): anonymous session counting. expire in 14 days to 2 years. no personal data tied to them.
• Google Tag Manager: loads the analytics tag. no separate cookies of its own.
• payment provider cookies: only set when you visit their checkout page (Stripe / LS / Paddle). they have their own privacy policies.

your rights — UK / EU / California

under GDPR (UK + EU) and CCPA (California), you have the right to access, correct, or delete personal data we hold about you.

since the only place we hold any data about you is your own browser's localStorage, the simplest way to exercise these rights is to clear your browser cache for eras.lol — or use the "start over" button in the quiz, which clears the quiz-related localStorage immediately.

for analytics-related data: opt out via the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on or by using "Do Not Track" / a privacy-focused browser.

third parties we work with

• Google Analytics + Tag Manager — Google Privacy Policy
• Lemon Squeezy (or alternative checkout provider) — they have their own GDPR-compliant privacy policy
• Hostinger (web hosting) — server logs only
• Google Fonts (DM Serif Display, Inter, JetBrains Mono) — fonts are served from fonts.googleapis.com; Google may log the IP of the request. fonts cache in your browser for repeat visits.
• Poki SDK (rewarded video ads) — when you opt into the rewarded ad on the rare-gate, Poki shows a 15-second brand video ad. their privacy policy applies during the ad view.

children's privacy

eras.lol is not directed at users under 13. we do not knowingly collect data from children. if you believe a child has used the site and you'd like the localStorage cleared, just clear the browser cache.

changes to this policy

we'll update this page if anything material changes about how data flows. the "last updated" date at the top reflects the most recent revision.
